A few words by the Director

Jacques Offenbach was the king of the French opérette in the Parisian style and it was full of wit and humour. He created what is known as a “museum of laughter” which has inspired other art genres.

Orpheus in the Underworld is a timeless, ironical and preposterous stroll in the myth of Orpheus, where love, hypocrisy and moral duplicity are still quite topical. It is a blend of often abstract humour that generates a liberating form of laughter.

The plot of Orpheus in the Underworld is set in the real world as well as in mythology and it deals with a philosophy of life that combines love, eroticism and the search for happiness.

The world of mortal human beings and the world of the gods are similar. The expectations, the flaws and the qualities are the same.

Maria Sartova
